Name of the Project
Small nuclear power plant (NPP).

Location
Jizzakh, Uzbekistan.

Project Owner/s
UzAtom Atomic Energy Agency.

Project Description
The proposed project involves the construction of a small nuclear power plant with a total capacity of 330 MW comprising six reactors with a capacity of 55 MW each.

Small NPPs offer several advantages, including shorter construction times, compared with large-capacity NPPs, owing to their compactness, and the potential to increase capacity according to the country’s needs.

Potential Job Creation
Not stated.

Capital Expenditure
Not stated.

Planned Start/End Date
Preparatory work started in April 2025, with the first unit expected to be operational by late 2029.

Latest Developments
First concrete for the first SMR had been expected to be poured in the March quarter of 2026, but a draft government document indicated December 2026.

UzAtom, however, has emphasised that the previously announced targets remain in effect, and there is no discussion of any postponement. “The date indicated in the draft reflects a conservative scenario, which envisages the completion of all numerous mandatory preparatory and licensing stages by this date", the agency has explained.

Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
Rosatom (general contractor for the construction of the plant).
